The picnic began in 2009 after Franny spotted a three-legged dog chasing a frisbee with another pup. She glanced over at the second dog to see if it was three-legged too — it wasn't. Realizing she'd never seen more than one tri-pawed dog in the same place at once, she decided she wanted to see it happen.
Franny put up flyers around the city, and exactly one tri-paw showed up to that first picnic. The owner loved the day so much that they encouraged Franny to do it again — so she did, and the tradition was born. -
Absolutely! All dogs are welcome — we just ask that four-legged pups set up around the perimeter of the event, so the tri-paws can take center stage and get the celebration and honor they deserve but set yourself up around the parameter of the picnic.

We'd love to have you! Reach out to us through our website or social media, and let us know you're interested in volunteering — we'll get you connected with what's needed for the next picnic. Every extra pair of hands helps make the day special for our tri-pawed guests of honor.

Bring everything you would need for your pup. A few essentials to make the day easy and enjoyable:
A blanket or camp chairs for sitting on the grass
Water and a bowl for your pup (extra water never hurts on a warm day)
Poop bags for cleanup
Your own snacks/lunch — it's a picnic, after all!
Sunscreen and a hat if it's sunny
A leash (even for the friendliest pups, it's a busy event with lots of dogs)
Your dog's favorite toy or treat, especially if they're joining the tricks or fashion show
A donation, if you're able — the event is free, but contributions help support the organizers and rescue groups involved
And most importantly: a camera, because you'll want to remember the tri-paws stealing the show.
-
Yes! Free parking is available near the event. We recommend arriving when registration opens to snag a great spot — after all, this is SF, and it's a beautiful location worth getting there early for
